Just to show the European Commission staff assigned to read this blog that I'm not a Europhobe, my latest recommendations both come from that continent. And not just the UK, but (gasp!) France. The French entry, Caravan Palace, plays gypsy electronica swing, with a strong clarinetist and fiddler, that occasionally reaches workout tempos (try "Suzy"). I'm linking to the UK Amazon site because the US version lacks the 2008 album. Caravan Palace is very strong in France but almost unknown here. Another current favorite, though again only a few of her cuts will reach escape velocity: Duffy, a Welsh singer who reinvents 60s soul better than Amy Winehouse -- but without the personal drama or the stupefyingly dumb lyrics.
It's not an assignment, it's a pleasure and occasionally a provocative challenge. I look forward to an acknowledgement that Europe has lots to offer, not just culturally but poltically too.

Well, *that* might take just a little longer... ;-)
